So, I knew this rant was years in the making. Frankly, this is probably just Part 1 of many more to come. But here goes.
I am the mother of two biracial children. They are bright, healthy, and in my humble opinion, beautiful. When we are out and about, we are mostly well-received. But, it is APPALLING how often I am asked, “Is she yours?” or worse “What is he?”. WTF??!!
Let me be clear about something here. I am not a terribly sensitive person. Sure, you can get me riled up quickly when it comes to my family, but I fully realize there are bigots, ignoramuses (sp?), etc. all over. I have come to expect that out of humanity. But really…even Elmo knows that skin colors in families vary widely … (gasp) even in non-interracial families. What??!! Shocking, I know.
Here is the thing. Couldn’t you just leave it at “Your kids are beautiful” or “What an interesting combination of skin and eye color”? Better yet, just keep it at “Your children are very well-behaved” – as that is a much bigger compliment for a parent.
I am not asking for ’sensitivity’ or political correctness. To be frank, I am not asking for one damn thing. I am merely ranting. I am fine with my family … in fact, I love us just the way we are (cue Billy Joel song).
By the way, you know how I answer the question when I am asked?
“She came from my womb … does that count as ‘mine’?”
So, if you have heard that before, you might just have seen us somewhere. And caught a live rant.
I might have also ranted about this here:
